Description
Turkish Specific solid machined hilt ersatz bayonet with scabbard. Machined hilt ersatz bayonet of uniquely Turkish design. The blade, crossguard and the shape of the hilt are identical to the German made Turkish pattern M1916 ersatz bayonet. It differs only in the construction of the hilt itself which was machined in a single piece from a solid block of steel. The blade is retained with 2 rivets through the tang inserted into the hilt. The base of the blade traps the crossguard in place against the front of the hilt. The pommel block pin found on the stamped sheet steel "grips" of the standard M1916 ersatz bayonet is noticeably absent as solid construction of the hilt leaves no need for it. The crossguard bears the same "dimple" as that on the standard M1916 to provide clearance for the tip of the cleaning rod when the bayonet is mounted on the M1890 or M1903 rifles. This particular bayonet has it's "quillon" shortened and reshaped as evidenced by the obvious lopsided handwork visible in the pictures. The narrow, unfullered blade bears a false edge on the top and comes to a "spear" point. No other example of this bayonet has been observed or published anywhere else.
