Description

M1905 bayonet shortened to M1 with steel scabbard. These odd steel scabbards are usually mis-associated with the US T2 experimental bayonets made by Hotpoint in 1944 but there is absolutely no relation between them. Sadly many overly enthusiastic collectors have paired these scabbards with T2 bayonets. Both the bayonet and scabbard were produced in Belgium in 1945 and offered to the US Army which rejected them. The only marking on the bayonet is on the underside of one of the grips and is from a Belgian plastics company. The knurling on the catch button also differs from the US button (see last picture). It is not known why these bayonets were initially produced as M1905s then shortened to M1s. The information I have provided is courtesy of Shawn Gibson https://www.bayonets.com/ and Frank Trazaska http://usmilitaryknives.com/ through their research.
