Description
M1879/95 conversion bayonet with scabbard. Mre de Steyr-Mre de Werndle 18?? on the spine of the blade. Most books mis-identify these as being for a Kropatscheck rifle but they are actually for the Chilean M1895 Carbine. The odd step on the back surface of the muzzle ring is for clearing the Carbine's front sight mouning band. This is the only M79 Kropatschek converted example I have ever seen and it has a smaller than normal cap on the release button. All the others I have seen were converted from M1874 Gras bayonets. This is one of those missing links bayonets that may explain why some authors have claimed they were Kropatschek bayonets.
